When you are lost in the woods what do you do? 

I have a 35 acre flat forest with lots of big pine and oak and patches all over the place of small new saplings that hide the horizon. When it is cloudy I can walk for 15 minutes before I get to a place where I can figure out which side of the lot is where I ended up - I may easily become lost if I forget my compass or gps device.

Recognizing that this is the way things are I recently started putting in east west paths (potential log collection trails) because the large oak has been devastated by a combination of gypsy moth and secondary pathogens and many trees are dead or dying. So now when I cross a flagged trail it is possible to figure out which one it is and which way is North (if the sun is obscured and I am lost again).

In that patch of woods we have some trees that have become the "possession" of some other person who does not pay taxes and does not do anything to help maintain the property. This "possession" can be done in a number of ways:

Putting in metal climbing rods,

Locking a tree-stand to a large tree and leaving it there for the tree to grow around the cables,

Building a wooden tree-stand with nails and bolts that are left in the tree,

Shooting bullets into the stem of the tree in enough places to kill the tree....

The evidence of this "possession" (trespass) may only become known when the tree is finally cut and the metal is found by ruining a $600 band saw blade when the unsuspected metal is eventually hit while cutting boards.

This kind of adverse "possession" can become the equivalent of a war for the control of that section of the local environment. 

So how do you know when you just have a problem as opposed to a WAR for possession?

As a country it is possible for the residents to lose their sense of who and where they are occasionally. It appears to me that this has happened within my life time by the activities of some very devious individuals and groups. So as Anna says we need to get out of the weeds and figure out  who we are and how we are going to take care of the "possession" problem that seems to have caused us to become lost.

If the "possession" of territory becomes a problem for the residents they need to address it themselves and ask for help when the problems they face are beyond their own abilities to deal with it. 

If they do not they could become embroiled in a war that could have massive consequences. 

So are we lost, are there signs of where we are for us to use to find out where we are?
